About

The La Crosse Public Library Tool Library provides access to circulating tools, home maintenance materials and so much more. Established with funding from a 2022 AARP Community Challenge Grant, the goal of the Tool Library is to help our community reduce cost-related barriers to home improvement, while also encouraging the exploration of new DIY skills and hobbies.

Borrowing Guidelines

Winding Rivers Library System (WRLS) card holders 18 years of age or older with full borrowing privileges are eligible to borrow tools (card must be up to date with outstanding fines under $10).

All borrowers are required to complete a waiver form. The waiver form must be signed annually and in front of a witness at the second floor Help Desk at the Main Library.

Tool Library check out limit is 5 items per borrower; only the borrower is authorized to use the tools checked out.

Lending period for tools is 7 days with the option to renew up to two times if no other borrower has requested the item.

Place holds before arriving to borrow a tool. You may need to freeze your hold if you don't want an item before a certain date. Library staff are happy to help you make a reservation or freeze your hold.

Return all Tool Library and Library of Things items to the second floor Help Desk at the Main Library.

Why buy when you can borrow?

Borrow power tools like drills, saws, and sanders, or tackle outdoor tasks with a lawn aerator, leaf blower, or garden cart. Need to hang pictures, fix a bike, or test your soil’s pH? We’ve got you covered with tool kits, repair sets, and meters. For creative projects, check out cookie cutters, sewing machines, and even a pasta press or KitchenAid mixer. From home improvement to crafting, yard work, and sports equipment, the Tool Library has the tools you need—free with your library card.
